This research is the result of studies and surveys done in the years 2003-2005, into public use of the capital’s museums, examining demographic and socio-cultural variables, data on cultural consumption, visit conditions and resulting enjoyment.

The study began in 2003, thanks to the Office of Marketing and Services of the Municipality of Rome, which requested an examination of the cultural heritage looked after by the Soprintendency. The main aim of the study was to construct an exhaustive and up to date picture, which would provide information about the museums, monuments, archaeological areas, gardens and historical parks of the Municipality. The final analysis of the data was designed to provide a system of information allowing objectives of efficacy and efficiency to be defined in the care of the heritage and the formulation of the Soprintendency’s marketing strategies.

The results of the study, subdivided into museums, monuments, and archaeological areas, have produced an important data collection regarding:
- the heritage, with administrative, structural and management data
- the personnel, composition, placement, remuneration, education and training
- the economic basis of the musems, with an analysis of the costs and proceeds based on the balance sheets of the Soprintendency for 2001.

A study has been done in parallel on the visitors to the principle museums of the Municipality of Rome, collecting information about enjoyment of the collections and services on offer.
This research has been able to trace the social demographic of the visitors and to gather their comments, suggestions and requests for improvements.
