European Heritage Day - September 28, 2013
Saturday, 28 September 2013 Roma Capitale will participate in the “European Heritage Days,” an initiative established by the European Council and welcomed by the Ministry of Monuments, Cultural Heritage and Tourism as a way to promote the cultural heritage of the member states of the European Union and reflect on the value of the common roots of cultural identity of the countries of the “Old World.”
Rome’s Office of Culture, Creativity and Artistic Promotion of the Municipal Department of Cultural Heritage together with the regional commission of the Ministry of Culture will participate in celebrating this event with free admission to museums and historic monuments. The program will offer a number of appointments include a series of events dedicated to the Appian Way, the “Queen of all Roads.” Visits are made possible thanks to the work of the staff of the sites involved and the curators of these sites will conduct the events in the program.
The calendar for the day will propose conferences and guided tours in a number of the city’s municipal museums (The Capitoline Museums, the Museum of Roman Civilization, Trajan’s Market, the Casino dei Principi and Casino Nobile of Villa Torlonia, the Museum of Rome, the Napoleonic Museum, the Pietro Canonica Museum at Villa Borghese, and the Gallery of Modern Art), as well as guided tours of a number of lesser-known archaeological sites, near the Capitoline Hill (the Insula Romana of Ara Coeli, the Area Sacra of S. Omobono and the Mithraeum of Via dei Cerchi). These itineraries have been created to acquaint the public with some recent restoration projects and allow them to discover some unique aspects of Rome.
In addition, for the entire day the program will offer guided tours and special opening hours for the sites of the Appian Way, walking excursions, games and educational activities for children with a special ”guided tour and treasure hunt”, all in collaboration with the Regional Park of Appia Antica and Zètema Progetto Cultura. Welcoming services will be provided by the Italian Touring Club.

On 28 September, on the occasion of European Heritage Day, Rome's Civic Museum Newtork Musei In Comune will be open and free of charge and will offer a rich program of guided visits and meetings, with the exception of the Capitoline Museums, where visitors will have to pay a € 3,50 special ticket (€ 2,00 for visitors usually entitled to free admission).
